I have been learning Mandarin Chinese since February 2016. I moved on from Memrise a about a year ago, but now I am back. The reason being is the pure listening approach, without review, was stressing me out because I would forget so many words. I am now experimenting with extensive reading. I am on my fifth Chinese language novel now, and it’s great to see the rewards, but I’m using Memrise to make up for my weaknesses, which for me, is my ability to remember how to read a character.
My language level in Mandarin now is a CEFR B2 in speaking, writing, and listening, and a C1 in reading. For the first year of learning I exclusively used Memrise with misc. resources to learn around 5,000 words. My fascination with Chinese characters has not waned, and as a result I am also interested in beginning to learn Japanese.
