Swedish 4 - Stereotypes and prejudices in courses

(Frederik Mller) #1

Swedish course 4 contains the translation sentence “French people love talking about food”. I find it unnecessary to share any kind of stereotypes and wouldn’t consider it a normal thing to do. Spreading stereotypes only adds to discrimination in society and it shouldn’t be in memrise’s interest to do this. The course is an official one from memrise.

Is it acceptable to have this type of sentences in courses?

The statement, “French people love talking about food,” is a positive generalisation that most French people would gladly own.

Yes, it’s acceptable to have such sentences in a foreign language course. It’s hard to imagine how discrimination could arise from such a statement.
