Signing with a Bad Shoulder

I’ve had a bad shoulder for more than a decade now and it acts up if I sign much. Now I’m happy to be receptive in sign language – American in this case – but learning is much easier for me when I’m active. Deaf people must deal with this problem on a regular basis so I was wondering if anyone had some tips. Do I just have to limit my signing activity or is there a way around this, i.e. signing with one arm? My left shoulder has no issues but my right is messed. Do people develop their own one arm signage or do they resort to reading and writing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
