New difference between Web & App for Watering/ Reviewing?

Is there a new difference between the way Watering/ Reviewing occurs on the Web and the App ?

On the web, when a level is completely planted (showing a flower) one is tested in the way that is intended, eg always shown an image and asked to supply the answer in words by typing, tapping or selecting the correct answer from 4, 6 or 8 alternatives.

This is why I have set up Reversed levels, swapping the testing when fully learned.

However on the Android App, I’ve recently noticed that although one is (perhaps) predominantly tested as intended, testing the opposite way does occur.

eg on ► this course

Sadly this can be an issue with reviewing.

I’m not sure of the effect on a Language course (eg English to Italian) but it would have the same annoying effect not testing (revising) the way intended.

This is in addition to the App not showing completed courses learned on the web, see ► this thread ◄.

Is this intentional or an oversight @MemriseSupport ?

Ask if you need further information.

Question.

Has any other Creator/ Contributor experienced this ?

Hi DW7,

I’m afraid I’m not 100% sure what you mean with this:

Do you have further details, screenshots or videos of the behaviour? It would be helpful to know specific differences between the intended behaviour (to the best of your knowledge) and the actual behaviour. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks,
A.

Thanks @ale_c, I’ll try and provide some screen shots.

As you will see on the web it should be Test on Name, prompt with Location Map

And this is what it should show when fully planted:

As you can see I am presented with a map and have to supply the name (typed or tapped or matching answer).

Is that clearer?

So what is happing is that normally I am shown a map on the App, but occasionally it shows the name and asks me to match the map (choice of four).

I’ll try and get a screen print on the app sometime.

Here are two screenshots @ale_c of testing on the App, showing the wrong way.

If you fully plant (flower) any level on that river course, then water (review) it on the web you should notice you always get presented with a map to identify.

But on the App you either get presented both ways (like when you are learning) or only occasionally getting it the ‘wrong’ way.

Look back to the editing screen shot I sent above.

This is what it should be of course:

Has anyone else noticed this change?

Isn’t this the regular behaviour? I mean, both the app and the web should test both ways, shouldn’t they? I haven’t ever had the need to turn that off though, so I might have overseen a way to achieve this, or a setting, if there is any.

Yes, I believe so (if I have understood the issue correctly). I think it’s always been that way. Here’s the relevant bit from the FAQ section on ‘testing directions’:

" Testing directions apply to typing and tapping (aka ‘rearrange the words’) tests only. Multiple choice tests will switch testing directions as you progress through a level, and there is no way of editing this."

Here’s the link (if it helps): https://memrise.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360015887097-Test-Directions-overview

Thanks @Olaf.Rabbachin and @alanh,

True, but

Firstly I believe the both ways only ever applied to the learning process (once it had been planted it behaved as intended - ie set in the level), hence the reason I’ve set up reversed levels.

Secondly I think the web IS keeping to this one direction only once planted.

Please let me know if you notice it swapping on the web.

Thanks again for your comments.

Testing directions apply to typing and tapping (aka ‘rearrange the words’) tests only.

Perhaps I’ve not noticed the type of test, but many of my courses are image related.

BUT

“Multiple choice tests will switch testing directions as you progress through a level”

Progress through to me implies learning (which I agree with).
I feel sure it was in one direction only once fully planted, hence this thread.

I was able to reproduce this. I does seem like on this course the test directions are swapped within the same level and the same session. It doesn’t occur on other text-based courses I’ve tried.

I’ve created a ticket for this (QA-982), which will be looked at asap.

Thanks for raising this and sharing more info!

Best,
A.

Hi @ale_c I’m so pleased you’ve been able to replicate this strange behaviour and even more pleased you agree that once fully planted (ie after the learning is over and one just revises/ waters) it should be solely in the direction stipulated.

You obviously read my clarifications above.

Interesting that it doesn’t happen in text courses.

What about your excellent language courses which are video clips and text?
(Although this was the first time I had encountered this issue.)

I’ll return to your Italian courses and my double text courses to check that the issue doesn’t occur.

But on the App you either get presented both ways (like when you are learning) or only occasionally getting it the ‘wrong’ way.

 Sorry I was not correct (clear) in my text

What I should have said was

But on the App [once fully learned and revising it] you NORMALLY get presented ONE way [like on the web] BUT occasionally it is presented BOTH ways (ie INCLUDING the ‘wrong’ way).

This phrase (from above and slightly modified below) is clearer (and correct)
