Memrise is dead. Let's get together and build an alternative

(Ms Combs) #206

I’m a teacher and I’ve been using Memrise with my students for years! I make my own courses so what they’re studying matches what we’re learning in class and what will be on quizzes and tests. Several of my colleagues make courses for their classes as well. ANd occasionally you can find someone else who already made a course using the same textbook…
Making the change to Decks in the middle of the school year is going to create a huge hassle! Especially if they don’t migrate the “groups” features, as the “stats” function is how I keep track of my students and give them credit for their study time.

To everyone talking about the new site - just a reminder that some time ago I got so disturbed with Memrise that I actually went and created one.
Take a look:! It’s entirely free, has flashcard formatting, image insertion, formula insertion, cloze deletion tests and what not.

Check it out, you don’t even need to sign up (only do if you want your results memorized and flashcards offered for rereview, with memrise’s algorithm), just click on some course and then on ‘REVIEW’.

If you would enjoy some other features - please hit me up, I’d be willing to add them.

I had actually something like this in mind. As a default courses and memes would be in general unrestricted mode. Only if flagged as safe, they would be reviewed by staff and eventually added to the collection of content restricted to underage users. (and there would be flags for outright abuses too, ie porn instead of memes or racism).

Moreover the idea I have is revolving about voting and crowdsourced curating/filtering of content. So in addition to the status-quo, of being able to search content by nr of users, there would be additional criteria and mainly the satisfaction. (the idea like in Amazon - five star voting)
So based on that, not only would users have it easier to filter through courses and content, it would give staffers an easy idea about priorities (they would not need to review the courses with lower satisfaction anyway, they would just start with the best)
You might wonder, if the voting/liking would not be gamed on. I have some fine features in mind here  … so it wouldn’t

You’ve made many decent points across various threads this morning. Am generally interested in making Memrise alternative and have been for a while, though they had market gummed up well previously; now they’re doing this, their blowing a nice gap in things and ostensibly creating an exodus from their own platform at the same time. Good opportunities there.

As have asked others, outline what you would want from a site/app and how you would think to achieve it in a PM. I’m a bit of a collator and seeking common ground from all who want a new platform, to see if folks can be organised into a team with the same goals : )

(So far it is certain that:

  • offline download is essential
  • there has to be cross-platform app
  • community created courses are an absolute must (that would need vetting if for public use and various features therin) – in fact, they should be the main goal so people can tailor there own learning and/or find high quality courses by people who know what they’re talking about (say, uncommon languages from a native who speaks them, for example)
  • search functions based on extra parameters such as course rating, number of users and creator, etc.
  • any forum/community must be open, easily accessible and people using it have to be listened to (so… not like Memrise, then)
  • allowing more contact between users outside forum, for the purposes of finding learner groups and general social requirements (less cold than main Memrise site), as with internal PM system on main site/app; also, ability to block users if needed
  • more customisation of learning patterns to better suit individual (number of words in session, mixing decks, all-type/no-type, turn on/off automatic completion of question upon typing the right thing, etc.)
  • closing off ability to ‘cheat’ points, swift spam filtering and other general necessities
  • base features must never be removed in the long term (especially if they’re mainly what people are paying for)
  • possibility for a more restricted (safer) version for classroom purposes, with thoroughly vetted courses only

Urgh, there are so many and that’s just a vague selection of them (trying to eat lunch on handed and type at same time, sorry) picked up from a few verbose or particularly outraged users. Memrise has created more activity on the forum with this announcement than I’ve ever seen, which has been a great opportunity to glean what people want, lol.

Thank You!

Nice to hear that  … I certainly will do that (PM You). Just quick reply here to let U know … because I will have to find some more time for anything a bit interesting (and I am at work now)

(Petr R Skupad8) #211

If You might find some more time meanwhile, could You round up some of the points You liked and why?

I have much mire in the store, because I did really thought through the possibility to build smth of mine own, if Memrise goes south. And applied to them also some of my knowledge of Game theory to cut down some unwanted unintended consequences in rating behaviors of users (people are prone to cheat - it has to be thought in advance and the rules have to be designed accordingly) and also for some new (unobtrusive and cool) principles of monetization (albeit with long time horizon preference - no quick bucks).

Super busy right now but yes, will do. You’re not the first interested so feeling tentatively hopeful for building some alternative. Not looking for quick bucks, as you say – interested in sustainable site that makes enough money to maintain itself mainly. I have just finished explaining to another person that I’m a project manager by nature and that am attempting to pull together a team who have the ideas, the know-how and the drive to do this; when I have enough info I can put together a nicely rounded plan.

(Hombre_sin_nombre) #213

@petr.r.skupad8 @isharr

Could you keep this community informed, if you are going to build an alternative app?
For the moment there’s no worthy substitute, so I’m interested. Most likely some other users feeling the same.

Presently seeking ideas from people with know-how in various areas. I’m a designer and project manager. Very much brain-storming stages. Should a plan come together well, updates will definitely be made. (I’ve even quit my (almost finished, too!) current project – wish I hadn’t spent so much time on it – to make time for this.)

(khx333) #215

Fix the things missing in current Memrise (and they will not fix due to lack of resources):

  • Group collaboration
  • Feedback system
  • Filtering
  • Ranking of classes

That’s just for the content creation side.

(𝓛ı𝕥𝕥lꦌ ꞗɪᴙᶑ ... 𝓑ⅈ𝘨 𝓦ᵒʳ𝔩̲ꝺ̲) #216

On my list.

Have seen you a lot this last day. Found myself wondering what your skillset’s like (because your posts are insightful and consistently logical).

(Hombre_sin_nombre) #217

Maybe @Olaf.Rabbachin and @LangAddict can be of some help here, too.
Any ideas, guys?

(Olaf Rabbachin) #218

I’ve been thinking about this too. I could even invest cash and some of my time. I am very much afraid of the time and money it would take to setup a system though, nothing that would be easily done, that’s for sure!

(Adrian) #219

I’m sorry, guys. I’m a langaddict, not a codeaddict. Would love to help, but my knowledge on these things is 0.

(𝓛ı𝕥𝕥lꦌ ꞗɪᴙᶑ ... 𝓑ⅈ𝘨 𝓦ᵒʳ𝔩̲ꝺ̲) #220

Please inform of skillset (nothing else necessary, don’t worry – just finding out what people are capable of and willing to do, for organisation purposes) in PM if you are serious about perhaps participating in a project to create a full community-course based system from scratch. There are several already interested with various skills (I’ve already been contacted by a frontend web developer, another designer, someone for app development, and I’m a project manager, for example).

(Olaf Rabbachin) #221

PM’ed you.

(Blue Francis14) #222

I can handle infra and back end and api development. Let me know if you need my help

I’ve been thinking about starting a project like this on my own too, but the biggest problem I see is not building the system, but launching it. How do you convince people to come to an empty platform with no courses created yet (without resorting to questionable actions like directly importing dozens of existing Memrise courses)? That’s what currently makes me discouraged. It seems there are already plenty of alternatives, but they have little traction (and I’m not sure if it’s necessarily because they have a poorer feature set than Memrise).

(David Duarte) #224

Please share your feelings about this huge change by taking the following survey:

The results will be shared with the Memrise team.

Best regards,
David Duarte

(Ismail Ghedamsif3) #225

True but I don’t think it’s a bad idea to create an app just for yourself.
