[Course Forum] Greek Cognates by neal.p.carey

Welcome to the “official” topic of Greek Cognates. Please use this topic to report errors, post suggestions or anything related to the course. We’re always open to feedback. Please use this Category to suggest new words.

Learn approximately 400 words that are the same in English as Modern Greek. You just have to get the sound of the Greek “in your ear”, some sound quite different than they do in English, but you can add some sophisticated and useful words to your vocabulary.

There is also “complete” audio for every word in the course!

I’m really enjoying the course and gaining a lot out of it, but I’ve noticed some inconsistencies between how some nouns are presented.

Most are present with the definite article in front e.g. η ευφωνία
But some are presented with the definite article afterwards, as so: εποχή, η
When I answered η εποχή it was marked as incorrect, which is shouldn’t have been as technically correct.

It would be better if all the nouns were presented with the same convention e.g. definite article + noun.
It would make the learning easier as the learner would not need to remember which convention is used for what words.

Thanks

OK, thanks for pointing this out. I’m glad you’re enjoying this course @owlielovesbooks

I have fixed “η εποχή” and a couple of others I found. There shouldn’t be any more, but please let me know if you find any. You should also be able to answer with or without the article, so if there any of those I’ve missed, do let me know.

Hi Neal,
I’ve noticed the audio for zoo and zoology is the same.

Will fix next week when I have access to my desktop.

I’ve fixed the audio for zoology.

First off, thank you so much for this course. I am almost through the alphas and perusing the list, I didn’t see autarky, so I’d like to suggest it. It’s a bit obscure, but I think less so than agronomist, so I figure it might be a good one.

autarky - αυτάρκεια

Thanks again!

I guess  - and I thought I had a pretty good English vocabulary, but this is a new one on me. Anyway, I’ve added it. Enjoy!

And thanks for writing - I’m glad you find the course useful.

Added approximately 25 new words today taken from the text “Ελληνικά για Σας”.

Thank you so much for this. I’m working through the Cortina Course for Greek and am having a great bit of success with listening to the audio, and decided to take this list of yours and work on creating an audio file of the vocabulary (just the greek words) to accompany the list. I owe you a huge debt of gratitude for putting this all together. Thank you. -Eric

Glad you’re able to use it and learn some Greek. Κάλη τύχη!
