Announcing mylittlewordland.com

I’m happy to announce the launch of mylittlewordland.com, a site for learning and reviewing foreign language vocabulary!

I’m currently cloning all public community courses from Memrise to My Little Word Land. This is a work in progress, but about 40,000 courses so far have been uploaded.

If your course is private, it will not be automatically cloned, and you’ll need to export it via Eltaurus’ CourseDump2022 script.

My Little Word Land focuses on:

  • User-created vocabulary lists
  • Web only (no mobile apps)

The site features a spaced repetition system that works as follows:

  • When you successfully review a word, the system records how long you’ve remembered that word for.
    • For example, let’s say you learn a word in the morning and then log in and review it 8 hours later. The system will record that you’ve successfully remembered the word for 8 hours.
  • When more time has passed than twice the time that you’ve successfully remembered a word, the system has you review the word again.
    • For example, if more than 16 hours have passed for the word that you learned in the first example, you’ll be prompted to review it again. (Because 8 * 2 = 16).

The beauty of this system is that it works well no matter what time you log in to review your vocabulary. Continuing with the above example, let’s say that you successfully reviewed a word 8 hours after you learned it, but then you don’t log in to review your vocabulary for 2 days. If you then successfully review the word, the system will record you as having successfully remembered it for 2 days and won’t have you review it again for another 4 days! Did you go on vacation for 2 weeks but still remember your vocabulary? Great, the system won’t prompt you again for 4 weeks!

Inspiration for this algorithm came from @cooljingle’s Catch Up Review userscript

If you’re interested, please sign up and create a vocabulary list or give one of the existing ones a try!

If you run into bugs or have anything you’d like to discuss, the My Little Word Land forum can be found at http://forum.mylittlewordland.com

Also, thank you to @BenWhately for graciously allowing me to advertise my site on these forums

Thanks, and happy learning! ^_^

Whoops, it looks like the registration wasn’t working! It should be fixed now

Thanks to @NiaTheCat for letting me know!

Best of luck.

@Marcus.W Thank you! ^_^

That would be amazing if Ben agreed and you did that, as insurance against them being removed from MemRise.

I guess after the last change of policy we are all feeling vulnerable.

@neoncube - do we need to contribute (crowd fund) to the server, if it holds all our Community Courses?

Thanks for doing this!

Do you plan to add more of Memrise’s features over time, or is this intended to just be a simple tool for spaced repeat word lists?

I ask because I would love to find somewhere to host the courses I spent the most time on (literally thousands of hours, years ago) but those courses require a lot more of Memrise’s features so I have not yet found anywhere I can put them.

Oh, and one more thing: Regardless of your answer to my previous comment, would you also post this to the memrise reddit? The forums here are going to be shut down in a few weeks and this discussion will be inaccessible, but reddit is likely to remain for years and years.

@cos There are a few more features that I’d like to add:

  • Support for audio
  • Support for images

Are there are any other features that your course would need to make use of?

Would you mind posting to Reddit about this? I gotta get to scraping the Memrise Community courses XD

I think it would be much much better if you posted there yourself, under your own name, since it’s your project. Whenever you get to it.

Okay, sounds reasonable, and thanks for the suggestion to post there

@cos Did you see my other post, above? Announcing mylittlewordland.com - #8 by neoncube

@DW7 At least for now, I think I should be able to cover the costs myself

AMENDED post

Just signed up to “My Little Word Land” as DW7 with my ‘Angel’ Cirrus cloud.

The confirmation email came in, but after a long wait of about an hour, I noticed it was placed in the “Other” folder (instead of the Focussed one) and I wasn’t even warned about it (unlike a Junk folder).
So it’s now set up for Focused.

Apologies to NeonCube for misinformation.

Ow, an hour is pretty bad. Currently I’m using a free service for email. If have more than a couple hundred people sign up this month, I’ll probably need to move to a $15/month version, which might also fix the junk email issue

Yup, I did see it! Didn’t have time to respond, but also, was hoping I could respond to your reddit post whenever you make it. It always feels icky to me to write substantial stuff on a forum where I know it’s all going to be removed or shut down soon, so I’d rather write somewhere where someone who sees it next month could still respond.

Makes sense! XD

I’m thinking it’d make sense to wait until I have the Memrise community courses migrated over to mylittlewordland.com before I post on Reddit. Hopefully soon!

BTW, you can also post at What features would you like to see? - My Little Word Land, if you like

As the task of migrating courses is enormous, could I offer a suggestion.

Start with those of us who are active in the Forum and migrate those courses first (Teaching and Studying if possible).

Then perhaps migrate populate courses.

Don’t want to be a killjoy, but, personally, I want to be able to do my lessons anytime and anyplace. That means that the app I need must be able to provide lessons on an Android phone - I’ll never use PC+browser for that. :frowning:

That’s funny, I never want to use anything but a PC, and hate the way websites I rely on have been appifying themselves by gutting their features and design to fit in a pocket. I loathe how they force their apps on you in order to invade your phones with push notifications and privacy violations, and try to steer traffic away from their websites toward this goal. Even in the rare instance that I practice on my phone, I use the Memrise website through Duck Duck Go. Then again, I never put money into my phone, so I always have just some crap that is a nightmare to punch keys on, and that I often throw (onto soft pillows and mattress, of couse) out of frustration while just trying to type a text.

Yeah, this whole situation is just unnecessarily bad for a lot of people for a multitude of reasons. Really think Memrise is missing the angles here, and that people are going to start voting with their wallets in an incredibly unpleasant way for their business.
